Writers' Block (2004)
I did the graphic in Photoshop and inserted it and a summary of the call for papers for this scholarly journal into a template developed by C. Eric Hoffman of the NIU Dept. of English.
David Lynch's Cosmology Comes to a Head (or Two): Mulholland Dr. (2002)
Yet another MCLLM presentation (only then it was called the Midwestern Conference on Film, Language, and Literature, or MCFLL). High points were the fact that I found French language trailers in Quicktime format and could show them, even though the DVD didn't come out until the following Tuesday.
Control Consensus Compromise: Community-Centered Web Design (2004)
My graduate thesis/scholarly paper project for a Master of Arts in Communication Studies. Directed by David Gunkel. Heavy use of CSS for positioning, with attention to usability and accessibility issues.
clevelandanonymous.com (2002)
First project for COMS 550/469 taught by David Gunkel. Uses a variety of Javascript features, mostly rollovers, window manipulation, and dating. Grabbed a script from a fertility drug ad to make the "Earthquake" effect, and implemented some CSS for the fixed backgrounds on the pop-up windows.
ProtoPostmodernist: Robert Myron Coates's The Eater of Darkness (2004)
A quick site used in lieu of Power Point or similar presentation package. Presented at the Midwestern Conference on Literature, Language, and Media (my first Literature submission to this conference).
ChaoSpirals blog (2000-2004)
Originally a project for ENGL 529. I'd never heard of "blogging" at all, and did a research project and paper on Weblogs. From there, I built several blogs for myself and for NIU. I have students use Weblogs in class when I teach HTML, and I model the process for them by showing them my blog.
COMM Alumni, NIU (2003)
Implementation of the Mambo Open Source content management system for an "online magazine" setup. Implementation of XML/ RSS syndication.
Irish Media & Culture (2000)
Final project for ENGL 529 (now 532). I went to Ireland in summer 2000 and collected photos and information, then built the site. The client wanted more images, where I focused on content for the coursework. I grabbed a Javascript from the Web for the rollover, though it involved "mystery meat navigation," which I mitigated with pipe-divided persistent navigation. I built the graphics in Photoshop.
Code Made Flesh: a benevolent god/emergent A.I. (2003)
Another presentation site in lieu of Power Point, etc. Also presented at MCLLM.
BreakRoom Stories (2006)
My friend Carl started a Podcast and I got the idea from a conversation in the hallway. This one gave me a chance to take some photos and work on CSS positioning. The graphics for the titles are transparent PNGs, so old versions of M$IE won't display them with transparency. Since GIFs don't handle gradients well and JPGs can't be transparent, the PNG was the logical choice.
RandomAnime (rough) (2002)
Final project for COMS 550/469 taught by David Gunkel. Uses a few small XML features (viewable only in MS Internet Explorer) and several Javascript features, along with Photoshop/Fireworks slicing, including rollovers and window manipulation.
Dept. of Communication, NIU (2003)
Developed originally using slices in Photoshop, but after some cross browser and cross platform inconsistencies, changed to a CSS format for color changes. Built in a table structure that mimics features of frames or javascript menus. I took all the photos and edited them to drop out backgrounds.

Telematics (2002) (redesigned 2004)
Website for the Center for Telematics, a lab run by the Department of Communication at NIU. I built the graphics and designed the logo.
